Abstract
Background: Sleep complaints are common among the elderly. Among the illness associated with disturbed sleep, respiratory symptoms and functions may be improved by the proper treatment. The improvement of respiratory symptoms and functions may affect better effect on sleep. The pµûpose of this study was to assess the relationship between sleep disturbance and the pulmonary function and sym¥áoms in the elderly.

Methods: We investigated 590 people aged 60 years or older who visited Health Care Center of Inha University Hospital in 1998. Sleep disturbance and the pulmonary function and symptoms were evaluated.

Results: The prevalence of disturbance maintaining sleep (DMS) was 21.3% in men and 40.1% in women whereas the prevalence of disturbance initiating sleep (DIS) was 2.8% in men and 7.2% in women. The frequency of DMS was significantly ºñgher in the elderly men with dyspnea than those without dyspnea. We could not find the relationship between DMS and the other respiratory symptoms such as cough¡® There was no difference of pulmonary function according to DMS. Through multiple logistic regression analysis, DMS seemed to be associated with factors such as gender, dyspnea. There was no association between DMS and factors such as age, m¥õr mass index, cough, smoking, exercise, FEVl and FVC.

Conclusion : DMS was more common in the elderly women than the elderly men. DMS seemed to be associated with dyspnea in the elderly men. But there was no relationship between the pulmonary function and DMS.
